Ragdoll Lane Chroniques et nouvelles

The two colorpoint kittens:

... the dawn of the Ragdoll...

Kyoto was a seal mitted male almost identical to his father except for the blaze, and Tiki was a chocolate colorpoint female. The first two Ragdolls had been born.

Kyoto and Tiki were the first cats officially registered as Ragdolls with the National Cat Fanciers Association, the NCFA, on December 30, 1966, with Ann Baker named as both breeder and owner. Daddy Warbucks and Fugianna were registered the same day, with Merle Pennels as breeder and Ann Baker as owner... It seems difficult to credit those who claim to have owned genuine Ragdolls in 1966 (see the thefts of Balinese cats), or even in 1967. Ann Baker was far too busy increasing her stock to part with a single one of her precious founders. The first Ragdolls sold as such were sold in 1969, when the Daytons acquired their first breeding pair from Ann: Rosie and Buddy.

The "Dark Side"

... the color of Buckwheat...

The birth of Kyoto and Tiki marked the beginning of what Ann called the Dark Side, and all kittens descended from Tiki were to fall into this category. Once this brother and sister were adults, they were mated, just as their half-sibling parents had previously been mated to conceive them. It may be noted that Ann did not follow at all the rules she had laid down for franchise breeders, for she would then have mated Tiki to her father, Daddy Warbucks, and done the same with the females from those unions. Do as I say, not as I do: Kyoto and Tiki had their kittens, including Raggedy Ann Kookie, a seal colorpoint male; Raggedy Ann Kookie Tu, a seal mitted male; Raggedy Ann Bambi and Raggedy Ann Toy Sue, two seal mitted females; and finally Raggedy Ann Toy Ling, a seal colorpoint female.

... and off the ship sails...

  • Kookie Tu × his mother Tiki → Raggedy Ann Heidi (seal colorpoint female)
  • Kookie Tu × Heidi → Raggedy Ann Buddy (seal colorpoint male)
  • Kookie Tu × Toy Sue → seal mitted male
  • Kookie Tu × Bambi → Raggedy Ann Melonie of Blossom Time (seal mitted female)
  • Kookie Tu × his mother Tiki → Orphan Annie
  • All descend directly from Tiki; none descend from Fugianna.

The "Light Side"

... Fugianna's line...

It includes the two founders Daddy Warbucks and Fugianna and one of their daughters, Raggedy Ann B'wana.

Fugianna and Kookie Tu produced a seal bicolor male (mid high white), Raggedy Ann Joshua

with Kyoto produced a seal bicolor male (mid high white), Raggedy Ann Woo Wong

with Kookie produced a seal mitted male, Raggedy Ann Pancho Villa

with Robin produced a seal mitted female, Rosie.

Ann Baker said that the cats on the Light Side had a slightly longer nose and longer, narrower ears, somewhat like Balinese cats (remember that American Balinese cats of the time had nothing to do with today's European Balinese; they followed the Thai Siamese standard: "applehead," literally a head shaped like an apple). The Dark Side leaned more toward the Himalayan: broader face, smaller ears, more compact body, and everything else.
